Anticorruption Independent Consultative Committee launched in Moldova

Chisinau, 7 June /MOLDPRES/ - The Moldovan president today signed a decree on the setting up of the Anticorruption Independent Consultative Committee – an international non-governmental organization which will investigate big corruption cases in the financial and banking sector.  

At a news conference, the head of state, Maia Sandu, introduced the members of the Anticorruption Independent Consultative Committee, made up of two international experts specialized in the investigation of big corruption cases. ‘’Today, I signed the decree on the setting up of this committee, which will be an independent institution for the studying and investigation of big corruption cases. I have done this, as I found out that the state’s institutions for combating corruption move too slowly. The Anticorruption Independent Consultative Committee will provide useful information to law-enforcement bodies,’’ Maia Sandu said.    

The Committee’s head, UN expert in combating corruption James Wasserstrom said that the main research activity of the newly created organization dealt with the analysis of management of the state’s corruption combating institutions. ‘’We want to learn the answer to the question why the Moldovan corruption combating institutions are not efficient in fulfilling their duty. We will then present public reports and recommendations to the state authorities,’’ Wasserstrom noted.    

According to the UN expert, after Afghanistan and Ukraine, Moldova is the third country to open such an anticorruption warning institution.

Alina Radu is co-head of the Anticorruption Independent Consultative Committee. The group is also made up experts of the Council of Europe’s Anticorruption Centre and former employees of IMF and the World Bank, as well as anticorruption warners from Romania.   

The organization will benefit from financial support on behalf of the European Union and the United States.
