Chisinau, 11 June /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today met the members of the delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), on a pre-electoral visit to Moldova, in the context of the snap parliamentary elections due on 11 July 2021, the presidential press service has reported.
The head of state welcomed the fact the PACE had ruled to send its election observation mission to Chisinau, given that this was not possible in 2020 over the Covid-19 pandemic. ‘’We discussed the way the ballot is prepared, including the way the polling stations opened in the Diaspora and the Transnistrian region will work and how the conditions necessary for the free and democratic expression of citizens’ will can be ensured, in line with Moldova’s legislation and the international one,’’ Maia Sandu said.
At the discussion, the Moldovan president noted that, in continuation, the electoral process from Moldova was marked by the problems inherited from the past. ‘’It is about the illegal financing of parties, propaganda and misinformation in public space, hatred speech and corrupting voters. The legal framework must be improved by the future parliament; yet, for the present ballot, the state’s institutions should fulfill their duties with maximal responsibility, in order to ensure free and fair elections,’’ the head of state stressed.
