Departed Moldovan writer would have turned 80

Chisinau, 3 July /MOLDPRES/ - A poet, prose writer, film director, scenarist Iacob Burghiu would have turned 80 years today.
Iacob Burghiu was born in the Zaicani village, northern Rascani district, on 3 July 1941. He studied one year at the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of the Balti-based Pedagogical Institute. Afterwards, he continued his education at the Film Direction Faculty of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (1964-1968). He was actor at the Vasile Alecsandri Dramatic Theatre from Balti (1958-1960) and Luceafarul Theatre (1960-1964).
After the graduation of the Cinematography Institute, Burghiu worked as film director at the Moldova-film Studio (1968-1987). He was film director of the Radio and Television Committee under the Soviet of Ministers of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic. He debuted in cinematography with the short film, Colinda (The Carol), made in 1968. Unfortunately, the film was not in the likings of the Communist authorities and was banned. As late as in the years of Perestroika, after 1985, people were able to watch this film.
Iacob Burghiu deputed in literature in 1966. He worked as adviser of the dramaturgy section and deputy head of the Moldovan Writers’ Union (USM). He held various positions at the Culture Ministry, including deputy minister, adviser at Moldova’s Presidency on issues of culture and cults. Burghiu was USM member since 1967 and of the Union of Cinema Men as of 1975. The writer was awarded the Mihai Eminescu Medal and the title of Master in Art. Iacob Burghiu died on 28 June 2003.
