Chisinau, 9 July /MOLDPRES/- Management of plastic waste continues to be inadequate, harming the environment and public health, and decision-makers are delaying the implementation of effective measures that would improve the situation in this area. A report by the Court of Accounts on audit of environmental performance in plastic waste management is published in the Official Journal today.

According to the report, the shortcomings of the legal framework and the lack of cooperation at interinstitutional level delay the development of an integrated plastic waste management system, which would ensure their inter-common, efficient and sustainable management.

"The main challenges faced by Moldova on plastic waste management are related to the poor quality of this waste and the lack of potential to turn it into raw material. The development of the waste processing segment requires close cooperation between two strategic areas: environment and economy. For the time being, this development is identified as a weak one in order to solve the problems in the field, to achieve the set goals", the document reads.

According to the Court of Accounts, the lack of institutional capacities for monitoring and control regarding plastic goods banned for sale encourages the illicit placement on the market and import of plastic bags, amounting to 169 million lei in 2020 alone.

The report was submitted to the Presidency, Parliament, Government, Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment, etc. for examining the results of the audit and taking action, according to the competencies, with the approval of a plan of measures to recover the situation.
