Electronic trade increasing in Moldova, National Bank says

Chisinau, 12 July /MOLDPRES/ - A significant increase in the non-cash payments was registered in Moldova in 2020, especially of non-cash payments on electronic commerce platforms, according to data by the National Bank of Moldova (BNM).

„More and more buyers from Moldova make online shopping. During the last year, the non-cash payments made with cards issued by Moldova amounted to 70.3 million payments worth 21.8 billion lei. About 11 million payments out of all non-cash payments were made without the card’s physical presence, on electronic trade platforms, which accounts for 15.7 per cent, of which 2.7 million operations made on e-commerce platforms in Moldova and 8.3 million operations made on e-commerce platforms abroad,’’ the Economics and Infrastructure Ministry (MEI) said.  

The value of the aforementioned payments was 4.8 billion lei, of which 1.2 billion lei – purchases on e-commerce platforms from Moldova (increasing by 50 per cent against 2019) and 3.6 billion lei (decreasing by 7.6 per cent against 2019) – purchases on e-commerce platforms from abroad.   

„At the same time, during the last year, the number of electronic trade platforms in Moldova grew by 28.7 per cent against 2019, reaching the figure of 525 platforms in late 2020, against 408 in 2019. This fact is due including to stimulatory measures from the roadmap of the Economics and Infrastructure Ministry for boosting the process of digitizing the national economy and of developing the electronic commerce,’’ MEI also said.   

According to the quoted source, the assuming of the priorities of the roadmap, political support provided by the government and the technical support provided by development partners allowed implementing, on a short period, important initiatives on the dimension of the online interaction and promotion of digital services for the business environment, use of instruments of electronic commerce by small- and medium-sized enterprises, simplification of customs and postal procedures, etc.
