Chisinau, 15 July /MOLDPRES/ -An American expert has recommended that farmers from Moldova use green fertilizers, in order to contribute to minimal investments in the preservation and enhancement of the organic matter from the soil, cutting the production costs or enhancing the crops’ tolerance to drought.

A professor horticulturist from the United States, Bruce Wiliams, said that Moldova had ‘’one of the most productive soils in the world, but which are  subjected to constant process of loss of organic matter.’’ According to him, the list of beneficiaries from the use of green fertilizers includes also the control over the erosion, reducing the degree of water’s pollution and enhancing the capacity of its infiltration in the soil, improvement of the crops’ productivity.

“The green fertilizers are classified into three basic categories: herbs, cricifers and leguminous plants. Their proper use allows farmers increasing the profit got from the growing of agricultural crops without harming the soil and the environment. In the USA, the green fertilizers are widely used and were promoted about 100 years ago after a terrible drought, which hit the agriculture and led to a mass migration of the population,’’ Bruce Wiliams noted.

According to the specialist, the loss of the organic matter in the souls diminishes the capacity of water’s infiltration and causes erosion, which leads to the decreasing of the content of organic substances through the removal of the surface fertile layer and during time, even to desertification.

In the end of his mission in Moldova, Bruce Wiliams worked out a string of recommendations on the use of green fertilizers for farmers.

The American expert paid a visit to Moldova, in order to provide counseling based on volunteering, through the Farmer-to-Farmer Programme of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
