Chisinau, 1 September /MOLDPRES/- The commemorative plaque dedicated to the ex-mayor Nicolae Costin, promoter of the rebirth and national emancipation in the Republic of Moldova, was unveiled inside the Nicolae Costin Gymnasium in Chisinau.
Attending the event, Chisinau mayor Ion Ceban said that the memory of valuable personalities of the contemporary history of the Moldovan state should be appreciated and promoted as an example to follow. “The political and professional activity of the former Nicolae Costin must be appreciated and promoted. As mayor of Chisinau, Nicolae Costin was the one who organized the city in the current administrative formula. Even if he did not lead the destinies of the municipality for many years, the activity of his reign had a far-reaching reform load ", said Ceban.
Nicolae Costin was elected president of the Chisinau City Council in 1990 and promoted several reforms in the development of the capital. At his proposal, the streets of Chisinau were given a national name.
He is also the one who contributed to the opening of the Romanian-English high schools "Mircea Eliade", Romanian-Italian "Dante Alighieri", Romanian-French "Gheorghe Asachi" and Romanian-German "Mihail Kogălniceanu", as well as of the "Onisifor Ghibu" Library . Nicolae Costin had an important say in the reopening of the churches between the Prut and the Dniester, including the reopening of the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral "The Nativity" in Chisinau.
At his initiative, since 1990, the busts of Romanian classical writers were installed on the Alley of Classics in the "Ștefan cel Mare" Public Garden in Chisinau.
He passed away on February 16, 1995, in Chisinau due to leukemia. By decisions of the municipal councils, a street in the cities of Iasi and Chisinau is named after Nicolae Costin.
