International conference on operations from East in World War II held in Moldovan capital

Chisinau, 2 September /MOLDPRES/ - The carrying out of the military operations on the Eastern Front during the World War II and their effects at present, problems of the memory policies and their impact on states’ development have been discussed at an international conference titled, Beginning of the operations in the East during World War II. The event is organized by the Agency for Military Science and Memory, in cooperation with the Hanns Seidel Foundation in Moldova and the Alexandru cel Bun Armed Forces’ Military Academy.   

During discussions, representatives of the academic and scientific environment from Moldova, Romania, Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania found out that the military operations on the Eastern Front, besides their immediate impact on the states from the region, had a crucial effect at present too, both at the political and economic and at the cultural, historical and social levels. In the context, the participants in the conference noted that the different, sometime subjective interpretation of the events from that period created confusion in the correct presentation of the historical development, memory culture, etc.   

According to Ambassador of Poland, PhD Bartlomiej Zdaniuk, the knowledge of the historical truth must be a policy of the state, especially in the education sector, ‘’as one cannot edify something, no matter in which field, without a correct and true memory policy.’’ The director of the Agency for Military Science and Memory, Ion Coropcean, said that, at present, one of the missions of scientists was to re-edify the historical truth and promote this historical memory, with the state’s support, at all levels.     

Attending the works of the conference were representatives of the Agency for Military Science and Memory, History Institute, Alexandru cel Bun Armed Forces’ Military Academy, Pro-Memoria Association (all from Moldova); National Military Archives, National Commission of Military History, National Military Museum King Ferdinand I, Hyperion University from Bucharest, Institute for Political Studies of Defence and Military History (all from Romania); National Defence University Ivan Cherniahovskyi (Ukraine), Military Academy General Jonas Zemaitis (Lithuania).
