Moldox festival of documentaries for social change to take place in south Moldova city

Chisinau, 5 September /MOLDPRES/ - The sixth issue of the Moldox festival of documentary films for social change will take place in the southern Cahul city on 8-12 September. The 2021 edition of the festival will bring to the attention of audience, through screenings of documentaries and public discussions, up-to-date problems faced by the society, triggered by the fragility of the social systems, as well as the effects of the climate changes on the daily life. 

According to the organizers, as each time, the Moldox festival presents to the Moldovan audience profound documentaries with social impact, the role of which is to open new horizons to the world where we live, to make us be aware of the fact that the social phenomena and the global problems are closer than we believe and regard us directly.

The film Honeyland by Ljubomir Stefanov, Tamara Kotevska (North Macedonia,  2019, 85 min) will be screened in Cahul on 8 September at 20:00. The documentary has two nominations at Oscar and shows people’s irresponsible attitude towards the environment and the lack of a visions for the sustainable development and in harmony with the nature.    Astfel, pe 8 septembrie, la ora 20.00, la Cahul va fi proiectat filmul „Honeyland” de Ljubomir Stefanov, Tamara Kotevska (Macedonia de Nord, 2019, 85 min). Documentarul cu două nominalizări la Oscar ilustrează atitudinea iresponsabilă a oamenilor față de mediul înconjurător și lipsa unei viziuni pentru dezvoltare durabilă și în armonie cu natura. 

On the second day of the festival, on 9 September at 9:30, organizers bring the film Lemn (Wood), a film by Monica Lăzurean-Gorgan, Michaela Kirst and Ebba Sinzinger (Austria, Germania, Romania, 2020, 97 min). The illegal cuttings of woods represent a global business which values billions. The document draws attention to the exhaustion of the natural resources because of the scarce legislation on woods’ protection, as well as to the impact of the massive cuttings of woods on the environment. 

On 10 September at 18:30, the Colectiv (Collective) film will be presented, directed by Alexander Nanau (Romania, Luxembourg, 2020, 109 min). The documentary, nominated at Oscar awards, is focused on the relation between the authorities and journalists, which watch the events of the first year following the tragedy from the Collective club and they eventually discover a network of corruption inside the medical assistance system from Romania, which is up to the highest level. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session, with the presence of a survivor of Collective and artistic employee of the film Mihai Grecea. Also on 10 September at 21:00, the audience will be able to watch the film, The Belly of the Beast, by Erika Cohn (USA, 2020, 83 min). The documentary is a strong exposition of the infringements of human rights in prisons for women from California, especially the right for reproduction.        

A film titled, The Town of Glory, by Dimitry Bogolyubov (Russia, the Czech Republic, Germany, 2020, 83 min) will be screened on 11 September at 18:30. The documentary brings the audience in the small Russian provincial town of Yelnya, where its residents are brought up to be national patriots with military training. Despite the social and economic problems faced by the province, priority is given to the excessive militarization of the society, beginning with the kindergarten and till the retirement age.    

At the same time, Moldox brings to the attention of the audience also documentaries signed by Moldovan directors, developed at the workshop Inspiration from Moldox Lab. Thus, the guests will be able to watch the film Cioburi din culise (Pieces from Backstage) about a ballet dancer from the Maria Biesu National Opera and Ballet Theatre, Larisa Baskatova. Also, the film of closing the festival, the documentary, Our Eva, by Ana Gurdis, describes the life of a family with disabilities from north Moldova, which gave birth to a perfectly healthy girl.  

The sixth issue of the Moldox Festival is organized by the Moldox Public Association, in partnership with Svenska Filmstudion, with the financial support of the Swedish Institute, Cahul city hall, Austrian Cultural Forum, Akzente German Cultural centre, Goethe Institute, Embassies of Germany and the Netherland , National Centre of Cinematography, Romanian Cultural Institute and other institutions.
