Young people believe to have few opportunities to work at home - survey

Chisinau, 6 September /MOLDPRES/- Young people in our country believe they have few opportunities to work at home, according to a study conducted by UN Moldova and UNICEF.

The Youth Priorities for Future survey aimed to consult the opinion of young people on the development needs and priorities of the Republic of Moldova for the coming years. The results include the opinion of 2,279 people aged between 11 and 35+, of which 32% are male and 68% are female.

Most respondents said that the education system in Moldova either does not provide skills for the future (38%) or did not know how to give it a grade (21%). Among the new subjects that children would like to include in the school curriculum are entrepreneurship education (44%), information technology and informatics (22%) and applied mathematics (11%).

The study found that young people want more employment opportunities and quality jobs. Every third person mentioned the need for school development programs in educational institutions. Thus, when asked what are the most acute problems they face, 40% named employment opportunities, quality of education (27%), opportunities for civic involvement (13%) and discrimination (12%).

And financial difficulties are a persistent concern among young people. Significantly, 1 in 5 (21%) respondents believe that reducing poverty and inequality should become the Government's priority area for the next 5 years. 15% each advocate for education and healthcare. At the same time, every 5th respondent (27%) believes that people living in poverty and those with special needs (22%) face discrimination more often. 13% of respondents rank first in the top of discrimination - the Roma population and LGBTIQ + people.

According to the results of the survey, only 13% of young people are often involved in decisions that influence their future in their own community, at the other pole being another 36% who say they are not included in the decision-making process.

The survey was conducted at the initiative of the United Nations in Moldova, with the support of UNICEF on August 18.
