Moldovan parliament ratifies Istanbul Convention

Chisinau, 1 October /MOLDPRES/ - The MPs today approved the ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention).
The treaty includes 81 articles with provisions through which the states parties ensure the prevention and combating of violence against women and the domestic violence, protecting the victims, criminal prosecution of offenders and adoption of integrated policies.
Following the ratification, Moldova’s authorities commits that the violence against women to be punished according to the law. Also, resources will be allocated to ensure the functionality of the crisis centres for the victims of violence, emergency phone lines, available 24 hours, shelters for the violence victims, services of psychological and juridical counseling, as well as other measures to this end. Each public authority will analyze, assess and plan the resources necessary to ensure the Convention’s implementation.
The document was adopted in 2011. So far, it has been ratified by 34 member states of the Council of Europe and was signed by 12 countries, including Moldova. The European Union signed the Convention as well.
