Denmark to allocate 200,000 euros for programmes to back press freedom in Moldova

Chisinau, 12 October /MOLDPRES/ - Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Nicu Popescu today had a phone conversation with Foreign Affairs Minister of Denmark Jeppe Kofod. The officials referred to the bilateral agenda, strengthening the democracy and the process of Moldova’s European integration, the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s (MAEIE) press service has reported.
In the context of the deepening of the dialogue with the European Union, especially in everything dealing with the environment and combating the negative effects of the climate changes, Deputy PM Nicu Popescu highlighted a potential for taking over the Danish expertise in ensuring the transition to a green economy and digital transformation.
The official noted that Moldova counted on the Danish know-how in the clean and efficient use of energy, sustainable transport, as well as in the field of research and innovation.
„I welcomed the announcement by my Danish counterpart on the earmarking, through the New Democracy Fund, of a sum of 200,000 euros for programmes on the support of the freedom of press in Moldova and counteracting the misinforming. We share with Denmark the confidence that the free and independent mass media is a foundation stone of any democracy,’’ Minister Nicu Popescu said.
The programme will be focused especially on the development of the regional media’s capacities, including from the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia, Transnistrian region, Taraclia and Balti city, being supported activities which can contribute to the enhancement of professionalism and the training of investigation journalists.
