Moldovan parliament ratifies Istanbul Convention

Chisinau, 14 October /MOLDPRES/ - The parliament today approved the draft law on the ratification of the Istanbul Convention in the final reading.

The document was backed by 54 lawmakers of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), while the MPs of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists boycotted the voting.

The Istanbul Convention includes 81 articles with provisions, through which the states parties ensure the prevention and combating of the violence against women and domestic violence, protection of victims, criminal prosecution of offenders and adoption of integrated policies.

Following the Convention’s ratification, the state will allocate resources for ensuring the functionality of the crisis centres for violence victims, shelters for the violence victims. Each public authority will analyze, estimate and plan the resources needed to ensure the Convention’s implementation.

Moldova signed the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence on 6 February 2017.
