Moldova joins Glasgow Leaders' Declaration on Forests and Land Use

Chisinau, 2 November /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova has joined the Glasgow Leaders’ Declaration on Forests and Land Use at the Glasgow (United Kingdom) Climate Change Conference. The declaration was backed by more than 100 signatory countries, in an intention to cease the cutting of forests till 2030.    

Among the declaration’s signatories, there are the European Union member states, Ukraine, Turkey, USA, Canada, Japan, Russia and other countries, the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s (MAEIE) press service has reported.  

Through this declaration, the countries commit to promote the sustainable development globally, including the sustainable management and use of forests and strengthen the local economies. The afforestation, at the same time, is our major medium- and long-term goal and Moldova believes that this cooperation is important for achieving the international objectives dealing with forests.     

The world leaders agreed on the implementation and, if necessary, the redesigning of the agricultural policies and programmes, in order to stimulate the sustainable agriculture, promote the food security and bring benefits to the environment.   

At the same time, the signatories reaffirm the international commitment, in order to significantly increase the financing and investments from a great variety of public and private sources, improving, at the same time, their efficiency and accessibility, to allow the sustainable management of the afforested areas, the preservation and restoration of forests and the support for the local communities.     

Nationally, there is a unanimous agreement that a programme on afforestation would bring benefits to the citizens through the creation of jobs in the rural zones, improving the agricultural productivity and diminishing the soil’s erosion, attenuating the impact of the climate changes locally, air’s purification and waters’ protection.
