Sugar beet cultivation remains strategic branch for Moldova - agriculture minister says

Chisinau, 16 November /MOLDPRES/- Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Viorel Gherciu paid a working visit to sugar factories to analyze the current situation in the sector. Representatives of the sugar industry briefed the official on financial challenges, production capacity, quantity harvested and quality of raw material supplied.
"The attention of the Ministry of Agriculture is focused on the development of the sugar industry, in order to obtain an increased efficiency of the economic activity carried out by the enterprises in the sector. The cultivation and processing of sugar beet remains a strategic branch for our country, which is why we must increase the competitiveness of domestic sugar both on the internal and external market ", Gherciu said.
According to the ministry's data, in 2021, out of the 16.3 thousand ha, a global harvest of sugar beet of about 733.5 thousand tons is forecast. So far, more than 50% of the beet-sown areas have been harvested.
