International Student' Day marked on 17 November

Chisinau, 17 November /MOLDPRES/ - Young people from all over the world mark the International Students’ Day on 17 November. More activities warning about the students’ problems are organized at university centres, including in Moldova, on this occasion.
In the context of the event, Education and Research Minister Anatolie Topala conveyed a congratulatory message, reading that ‘’the International Students’ Day is an occasion to remind you that you are the privileged people of the time, as you have your way ahead of knowledge and the knowledge means power, freedom in actions and in thinking.’’
„Your role in the society is recognized and appreciated. You are the progressive force, which started numerous changes in the history, fighting for freedom, democracy and other fundamental values of the mankind. At the same time, the best teachers, mentors, leaders, those who lead masses are born of the best students,’’ Topala said.
According to the minister, the period of the student days is dedication to education and after the studies, creation comes next, which starts with research in almost all cases and in all sectors of professional training. ‘’Dear students, just as you have always been the ones to start numerous changes and radically transformed the society, I urge you to give all the best to the country at present as well,’’ the official stressed.
Presently, over 30 higher education institutions work in Moldova, state and private, in Chisinau, Balti, Cahul, Taraclia and Comrat. Some of the universities from Moldova are regularly included in world quality tops. For instance, the report Webometrics investigates 24,000 higher education institutions from all over the world, of which 27 were universities were from Moldova. These universities were evaluated according to the way of teaching, teaching staff, scientific and technical basis, performances achieved by students. Thus, according to the study, the most demanded universities from Moldova are the Moldovan Technical University, State University of Moldova, Ion Creanga State Pedagogical University, Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova, Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Free International University of Moldova, State Agrarian University of Moldova, Alecu Russo State University from Balti, State University of Cahul.
The day of 17 November was officially declared International Students’ Day by the International Students’ Council in 1941, in order to commemorate the 1939 event held in Prague. Back in 1939, the Nazi occupants from Czechoslovakia suppressed in Prague a demonstration of students from the Medicine Faculty of the Charles University, which marked the moment of creation of the independent Czechoslovakian Republic. Following the demonstrations’ suppression, nine students died and over 1,200 ones were sent to concentration camps.
