Moldova attends international workshop on environment

Chisinau, 18 November /MOLDPRES/- Several topics related to ensuring compliance with environmental legislation are discussed at Regional Workshop for Eastern Partnership Countries, held on November 17-18, within the European Union for the Environment / EU4Environment regional project. The workshop is initiated by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development in collaboration with environmental institutions in partner countries, including the Republic of Moldova.

Yesterday, during the event were presented the Studies on the Systems of ensuring the observance of the environmental legislation in Moldova and Armenia, carried out by the OECD in 2020-2021.

"The three institutions cooperating in the field of ensuring compliance with environmental legislation in the Republic of Moldova are the Ministry of Environment, the Environment Agency and the Inspectorate for Environmental Protection. However, the number of authorization staff in the Agency and the Inspectorate should be increased, which would increase the performance of the institutions, making them more efficient and transparent, ”said forum participants.

Also, the steps that could be considered to strengthen the performance of the Environmental Agency and the Inspectorate for Environmental Protection were pointed out. They would consist of optimizing the supervision of their activities, rethinking the structure with a high level of fragmentation, reducing the risks of corruption identified within the Agency and the Inspectorate, implementing a training program, adapted for employees and inspectors based on a skills gap analysis, digitization activity and services, etc.

The workshop is part of the European Union for the Environment (EU4Environment) Project, which supports the six Eastern Partnership countries - Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine - to preserve their natural capital and increase the well-being of the people of from an environmental point of view. The project is funded by the EU and implemented by five partner organizations: the OECD, the UN, the United Nations Environment Program (UN Environment), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the World Bank, with a budget of around € 20 million.

The implementation period of the project is 2019-2022.
