Moldovan Interior Ministry to sign agreement with FBI

Chisinau, 22 November /MOLDPRES/ - The Interior Ministry (MAI) will sign an agreement with the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). Interior Minister Ana Revenco today made statements to this effect at a news briefing. She unveiled the results achieved following a working visit by a MAI delegation to the United States on 14-19 November.    

The minister noted that the visit had taken place in the context of the Moldovan-American strategic partnership. ‘’The assistance provided by colleagues from the USA has a significant contribution to the capacities of the law-enforcement bodies from Moldova. The visit was generated also by the new needs of cooperation between Moldova and the USA, in the context of the new challenges to the international and regional security; here, we talk about the pandemic and the migration crisis, as well as about the pace with which the cyber and cross-border criminality is developing,’’ Revenco said.     

The minister also said that, within the visit, the meeting had taken place at the headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Investigations, as a result of which FBI and MAI committed to sign an official agreement of exchange of biometric data within the FBI programme, Global exchange of biometric data and other identity data. Once formalized, the concerned agreement will give possibility to seek in database of FBI of almost 80 million recordings and receive back a report of any results on the transnational terrorists and criminals known or suspected. Since 2002, over 50 countries have participated in this programme, which have access to about 450,000 biometric data.   

At the news briefing, the minister informed also about the delegation’s meeting with U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, former ambassador to Moldova Dereck J. Hogan. The ratification by Moldova of the Istanbul Convention was described by the American official as an important step in combating the violence against women and the domestic one. ‘’Hogan congratulated Moldova for the democratic and pro-European course chosen, as well as for the state’s efforts to develop this way pro-actively and for the citizens’ benefit,’’ Revenco added.
