Moldovan president, Council of Europe Secretary General discuss cooperation in justice reform, fighting corruption

Chisinau, 22 November /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today had a meeting with Council of Europe’s Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić, on a visit to Moldova. The discussions were focused on the carrying out of the projects included in the Action Plan for Moldova for 2021-2024, which regard the ensuring of the integrity of the actors in justice, combating the violence against children and women, backing the media and other sectors, the presidential press service has reported.
The officials discussed also aspects on the cooperation in the field of justice reform and fighting against corruption, which is the principal priority of the Moldovan governance. ‘’We appreciate the recommendations by the high-level working group of the Council of Europe, set up for backing Moldova’s effort in this sector. The authorities are set to act firmly, in order to get the Moldovan justice out of the captivity of the corrupt groups and the support of the development partners is quite precious in these conditions,’’ the head of state said.
At the meeting, President Maia Sandu informed about the recent ratification in Chisinau of the Istanbul Convention. She said this proved the authorities’ commitment to tackle, with all seriousness, the issue of domestic violence, which hits a lot of women in Moldova.
The president also stressed that Moldova was willing to further develop the partnership the country had had with the Council of Europe for 26 years, in order to edify an open and prosperous society, in which the people’s rights are fully observed. ‘’The council of Europe is a reliable partner of our country in the process of democratization and defence of human rights in Moldova,’’ the head of state added.
