Moldovan president, PM award prizes to sportspeople with performances

Chisinau, 2 December /MOLDPRES/ - Thirteen sportspeople from Moldova, who got outstanding performances at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, were awarded prizes at the headquarters of the government during a today’s official ceremony, with the participation of President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita. The cabinet earmarked 10.8 million lei for giving prizes to the Olympic sportspeople, as well as those who contributed to the training of the Olympic team – coaches and physicians, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.   

In her speech, President Maia Sandu said: ‘’The physical activity and sport are catalysts of the social change for development. We want to  edify a society which values and practices sport and physical culture not in words, but in concrete actions. We want to create conditions for the development of the future champions among young people from Moldova. We can do this together.’’ 

For her part, PM Natalia Gavrilita stressed that the event paid homage to  talent, ambition and courage and the results achieved by the Olympic sportspeople represent an occasion of pride for the entire country.      

„I congratulate you for the fact that, despite all difficulties, you manage to promote the country’s image in the world, to give it international fame, brightness and appreciation. When the flag of Moldova flies on the podium and the national anthem is sung at Olympic ceremonies, there is holiday in each home. Your work must be rewarded and the aspirations – supported,’’ Natalia Gavrilita said.    

In the context, the prime minister stressed that the government was paying special attention to the development of the performance sport and the investments in the improvement of the sports infrastructure in Moldova were on the list of priorities of the cabinet of ministers.  

„Over 160 million lei was allocated for the development of the national sport in the draft state budget for 2022. We are to improve the framework of policies for the modernization of the physical education and sport system. Yet, the most important thing is to provide the support needed for the participation of performance sportspeople in national and international competitions and to develop opportunities for attracting the funds necessary for the development of sports bases in Moldova,’’ the PM noted.     

Eight sportspeople from Moldova got results between the third and eight places at the 32nd issue of the Summer Olympic Games and 5 sportspeople representatives of six national sports federations were offered prizes at the 16th edition of the Paralympic Games.  .
