Roundtable on adaptation to climate changes organized in Moldovan capital

Chisinau, 14 December /MOLDPRES/ - A roundtable on the limitation of the global warming and adaptation to the climate changes, in the context of the Glasgow Climate Pact, was organized in Chisinau on 13 December. The event brought together representatives of competent institutions and academic environment, in order to discuss the decisions established at the recent Summit on climate chances – COP26.    

The participants exchanged opinions on the key sectors on which the national authorities and the international community should focus in the fight with the climate changes. At the same time, they considered the effect of the climate changes on the agriculture and brought for discussion potential solutions to ensure the sustainability of the agricultural exploitations and to identify new measures of the sector’s adaptation to the climate changes.    

„The agriculture is a sector directly dependent on the meteorological and climate conditions. In the last years, the territory of Moldova has been hit by phenomena related to climate changes. In this context, the measures of attenuating and adaptation to the climate changes must become a priority and should be integrated into the strategic documents. Thus, we will be able to reduce the potential damages, will ensure the sustainability of the agricultural sector,’’ Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Viorel Gherciu said.    

The conference’s works included the setting forth of studies by professor Rattan Lal from the Ohio State University (USA), laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize (2007) and World Food Prize (2020), of the leadership of the Selecția (Selection) Institute other representatives of the academic community. The researchers informed about the need to maintain the health of the soil through strengthening the eco-systemic services, about the best measures for limiting the global warming and adaptation to the climate changes, with ensuring the country’s food security, as well as the opportunities of adaptation and development of the agriculture, in the context of the climate changes.      

On 31 October – 13 November 2021, the world leaders brought together in Glasgow, the United Kingdom, at the United Nations Climate Changes Conference COP26. The goals of the summit were: assuming more ambitious goals of reducing the greenhouse gas’ emissions till 2030; discussing measures of adaptation to the inevitable effects of the climate changes; increasing the financing for the climate actions, especially for the developing countries.
