Physician from Chisinau sentenced to three years of imprisonment for malpractice

Chisinau, 14 December /MOLDPRES/ - A physician from a medical institution of Chisinau has been sentenced to three years of imprisonment for the negligent violation of the rules and ways of providing medical assistance, which resulted in the death of the patient.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG), in 2018, the concerned physician, employed at a public medical and sanitary institution from the Moldovan capital, while on duty, ignored the rules and ways of providing the medical assistance in case of medical and surgical emergencies with threat to life and erroneously assessed the health condition of a sick person, non-providing the continuous supervision. Subsequently, in the lack of an incomplete diagnosis, he took decision to carry the patient to another medical institution, although the urgent hospitalization was needed, as the sick person was hit by heart attack.
According to the quoted source, prosecutors proved in court the direct relation between the infringement of the rules and ways of providing the medical assistance by the physician on duty and occurring of the patient’s death.
The physician was sentenced to 3 years of imprisonment in an open-type penitentiary, with the deprivation of the right to carry out medical activity during 4 years. Also, the court ruled the collection of 150,000 lei from the account of the defendant for the benefit of victim’s successor, as moral damage caused through offence.
