As many as 1,700 detainees to be amnestied in Moldova

Chisinau, 24 December /MOLDPRES/ - The MPs today adopted, in the final reading, a draft law on amnesty, in connection with the 30th anniversary of Moldova’s Independence. Thus, more than 1,700 detainees are under the action of the amnesty, of whom 67 will be liable to immediate release and in the case of the others, conditioned release before term will be enforced or release following the shortening of the term.   

According to the latest amendments approved, pregnant women an those women who, till the entering into force of the present law, were sentenced for up to nine years of imprisonment inclusively, have children with ages up to 12 years and were not deprived of parental rights, are released from serving of the punishment.      

Under the document, a special commission will be set up, which will analyze the files on amnesty. In this respect, the National Administration of Penitentiaries will submit to the Commission the list of convicts falling under the action of this law. Subsequently, decision-makers will initiate approaches to courts competent with the enforcement of a solution, such as the release from punishment or shortening the convict’s punishment.
