Former President celebrates birthday today

Chisinau, January 17 / MOLDPRES /- First President of Moldova Mircea Snegur turned 82 today.

Mircea Snegur is one of the leaders of the national liberation and rebirth movement. He was the main supporter of the bill which provided for the granting of the Romanian language the status of official language of the state and the retur

n to the tricolor flag, a fact that attracted the sympathy of Moldovans. Mircea Snegur supported the proclamation of sovereignty, the independence of the Republic of Moldova and contributed to the recognition of the young state by the West. During the student strikes in the spring of 1995, he was the one who declared that the correct name of our language is Romanian.

The merits of the first President were appreciated with several distinctions. In 2000 he was awarded the Order of the Republic. He is an Honorary Doctor of the Agrarian University of Chisinau, the International Free University of Moldova, the University of Ankara and the Academy of Sciences of Moldova.
