Chisinau city hall to buy five devices for breast screening

Chisinau, January 18 / MOLDPRES /- The capital's city hall intends to buy five devices for breast screening.
Local authorities in Chisinau have announced that the municipal program for the prevention of breast cancer has been completed. According to representatives of the municipal administration, the program provides for the procurement of five mammograms for mandatory screening for eligible people and information and training sessions for human resources, to strengthen the existing municipal infrastructure to prevent breast cancer.
The head of the General Directorate of Medical and Social Assistance, Boris Gâlcă, mentioned that by undertaking prophylactic measures among women, the early detection of breast cancer cases will be improved. "It is a breast screening model that is being implemented in the European Union and can become accessible to the female population in Chisinau," the official said.
The breast cancer prevention program will become accessible after its approval by the Chisinau Municipal Council.
According to international statistics, every 3 minutes a woman from around the world is diagnosed with breast cancer, and one in nine is affected by this disease during her lifetime. There are 1.7 million new cases worldwide every year. Every 14 minutes a woman with breast cancer dies (77 thousand deaths annually), of which 40 percent are up to 65 years old.
In the Republic of Moldova, breast cancer holds the first place in the structure of morbidity from malignant tumors in women and represents 16% of annual oncological morbidity. More than 10,000 patients are diagnosed with the disease. About 1,000 new cases are reported each year. Women are most commonly affected by breast cancer after the age of 50.
