Project on sustainable development of municipal public transport launched in Moldovan capital

Chisinau, 19 January /MOLDPRES/ - The Chisinau city hall today launched an initiative on sustainable development of the municipal public transport titled, MOVE IT like Lublin, - a project financed by the European Union.  

The project provides for the analysis by independent experts of the current situation in the public transport from Chisinau, its comparing with the transport system from Lublin, (Poland), taking over good practices of modernization.  

According to the city hall, the project has three main goals: improving the policies and legislation of municipal public transport; strengthening the institutional capacity of the public transport and communication means general department; modernization of the system of management of the road traffic in Chisinau.   

At the launch of the project, the Chisinau general mayor, Ion Ceban, said the city hall would continue developing the implementation of local projects in the transports sector. Thus, for this year, the Municipal Council budgeted 80 million lei for the purchasing and assembling of trolley buses. ‘’The technical assistance project, MOVE IT like Lublin, within the programme, EU: Local Authorities – Partnerships for sustainable cities in the South-Eastern Europe, represents an important step in the improvement of the public transport from the Chisinau city. I offer thanks to the representatives of the European Union in Moldova for the considerable financial support provided to the city hall,’’ the mayor noted.   

In the end of the project, the city hall will carry out the harmonization of the local urban transport legislation with the European one; the transport enterprises Urban Park of Buses and the Passenger Electric Transport Administration will be reorganized and the city will have a plan of sustainable urban mobility.
