Moldovan poet passes away

Chisinau, 19 January /MOLDPRES/ - Poet, translator, book editor, holder of the honorific title Master of Literature Ion Vieru died at the age of 80 years today.
”Through the disappearance of Ion Vieru, we have lost a gifted writer and a colleague of great culture and human sensibility. May he rest in peace,’’ reads the obituary signed by the Moldovan Writers’ Union.
Ion Vieru was born in the Pelinia village, Balti county (presently Drochia district), on 7 December 1941. In 1965, he graduated from the Philology Faculty of the Moldovan State University. He worked as editor at the National Radio and TV during 1966-1972, editor at various institutions, head of department and adviser at the Moldovan Writers’ Union as of 1992.
Ion Vieru wrote his first poems in 1969.
Vieru was member of the Moldovan Writers’ Union beginning with 1972 and member of the Writers’ Union of Romania starting from 1996. In 1996 and 2005, Ion Vieru was awarded the prize of the Literature and Art weekly newspaper, in 1998 – the prize of the Culture League of the Romanians Everywhere for a volume of poems and in 1999 – the honorific title Master of Literature.
