Moldovan speaker conveyed message on Holocaust Remembrance Day

Chisinau, 27 January /MOLDPRES/- Speaker Igor Grosu conveyed a message on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the parliament's communication and public relations department has reported.

The message reads:

"Today we pay tribute to all those who suffered from the criminal, discriminatory, anti-Semitic and racist policies of World War II. It is a dark chapter in our past, but one that must not be forgotten.

Unfortunately, unimaginable crimes have taken place in Moldova today, victims of which were especially the Jews and the Roma. Some figures - by the end of the 19th century, a quarter of a million Jews lived in Moldova, about 12% of the population at that time, that is, every ninth inhabitant was Jewish. An important, educated and wealthy community that fully participates in the daily life of our region. But in just three years of war, this community has been virtually decimated, bringing the death toll to tens, if not hundreds, of thousands.

It was an indescribable tragedy that we have no right to forget. We owe it to ourselves to remember how those atrocities took place and to make every effort to make such crimes against humanity no longer possible.

That is why honoring the memory of the victims of the Holocaust means fighting phenomena that are foreign to the laws of society, such as anti-Semitism, xenophobia, racism, and other forms of discrimination.

We must prevent hatred, lies or misinformation in any form and any form of extremism that divides society and makes us intolerant of each other.

Today we have a duty to learn the lessons of the past so that tomorrow our children and our descendants can live in a safe, free and prosperous society. ”
