Moldovan MPs adopt new code of railway transport

Chisinau, 3 February /MOLDPRES/ - The MPs today voted the code of the railway transport in the final reading.

The new code was worked out for implementing the commitments taken through the Moldova-European Union Association Agreement, as well as in order to implement the concept for the restructuring of the railway sector and the state enterprise, Railway of Moldova (CFM).

Under the document, the railway infrastructure will further belong to the state and the services of traction, passenger and freight transport could be provided by private operators.

Once the CFM restructured and with the entering into force of the new code of the railway transport, the government will be obliged to partially finance the maintenance and the reconstruction of the railway infrastructure, as well as to provide subsidies for the operators of the railway passenger transport.

At the same time, the code sees the creation of the Railway Authority as administrative authority subordinated to the Infrastructure and Regional Development Ministry with form of legal organization of agency, with duties of control in the railway sector.
