United States to provide Moldova with support worth 50 million dollars

Chisinau, 6 April /MOLDPRES/ - The United States will provide Moldova with support worth 50 million dollars, in order to cope with the challenges, strengthen the democracy in the country and reduce the dependence on the markets from the East. Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Samantha Power made statements to this effect at a joint news conference with President Maia Sandu today.  

The head of state thanked the USA, as well as USAID for the support provided during those 30 years since the establishment of the diplomatic relations. Maia Sandu asked for backing in the process of managing the crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine.

„What is happening in Ukrainian villages now is terrible. The pictures with the atrocities committed in Bucha left us with no words. Millions of people had to flee because of the war and 96,000 Ukrainians found shelter in Moldova. Now, we must consolidate efforts, in order to reestablish the peace in Ukraine. The international community should do its utmost to cease the Russian military aggression and prevent other losses of human lives,’’ Sandu noted.  

The Moldovan president also said that Moldova would feel the consequences of the war much time ahead, reiterating that the authorities did not give up the reforms planned.

The USAID Administrator said that the USA would increase the assistance for Moldova and would provide support, including for the mass media sources. ‘’I admire Moldova for the courage and kindness proved in the process of management of refugees. Today, I am happy to announce another sum of 50 million dollars for Moldova, in order to strengthen the democracy and reduce the dependence on Russia’s markets and the Russian energy. We will continue supporting the justice reform and the extension of the renewable energy projects,’’ Samantha Power added.
