Chisinau, 3 May /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu, on the World Press Freedom Day, has conveyed a thought of solidarity to all journalists who do their job with responsibility and courage on these difficult days. The head of state says that presently journalists, sometimes putting their lives at risk, bring news to our homes, and in this way, they fulfill the most important mission of the press – to inform, the presidential press service has reported.
In her message, the Moldovan president evokes sad statistics, according to which 20 journalists died in battles along with soldiers in those 69 days of war, with journalists’ reports becoming true front reports.
According to the head of state, the free press remains the foundation of a free and democratic society, which we everybody want. ‘’The free press, as the freedom in itself, is not a destiny, but an asset which we must daily defend – from the political and economic interests which try to subordinate it, as well as from the dangers coming from inside the guild, caused by the looking for audience. A chase which, in a world full of falsehoods, propaganda and misinformation, becomes simply noxious,’’ the head of state.
On the Press Freedom Day, President Maia Sandu reminds about a key principle of the work of journalist, which no audience can cancel – the responsibility for the written word. The head of state said that, only through responsibility and objective informing, journalists can help the citizens understand the falsehoods and provocations, take informed decisions and contribute to the society’s consolidation. ‘’Only in this way, the press can change for the better the lives of the people from Moldova, being a true Forth Power,’’ President Maia Sandu said in her message addressed on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day.
