Moldovan president celebrates birthday

Chisinau, May 24 / MOLDPRES /- Moldovan President Maia Sandu is celebrating her 50th birthday today.
She was born on 24 May 1972 in Risipeni village, Falesti district. She graduated from her native village in 1989. Between 1989 and 1994, she was a student at the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova, Faculty of Management. After graduation, she studied at the Academy of Public Administration in Chisinau, obtaining the title of Master in International Relations (1995-1998). She continued studies at Harvard Kennedy School, USA, obtaining the title of Master in Public Policy (2010).
According to the National Calendar, she started professional activity as a consultant, then she was deputy head of department at the Ministry of Economy (1994-1998). In 1998-2005, she worked as an economist at the World Bank Office in Chisinau, coordinating the Bank's projects to support reforms in key sectors of the economy of the Republic of Moldova. She continues activity as director of the General Directorate for Macroeconomic Policies and Development Programs at the Ministry of Economy and Trade (2005-2006); program coordinator at the United Nations Development Program (2007). In 2006-2009 she was a consultant in various projects in the field of good governance and public administration reform. Subsequently, after completing studies at Harvard Kennedy School, USA (2010), in 2010-2012 she was an advisor to one of the executive directors of the World Bank in Washington.
She started political activity in 2012. In 2012-2015 she was Minister of Education in the Government of the Republic of Moldova.
In May 2016, she founded the Action and Solidarity Party, whose leader she was until December 2020. In 2019 (February-June), she was a deputy in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova. In June -November 2019, she served as Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova. Starting with December 24, 2020, Maia Sandu is the President of the Republic of Moldova, being the first woman elected to this position in our country.
As a sign of high appreciation for contributing to the promotion of reforms based on European values and standards, for special merits in ensuring the negotiation, signing and ratification of the Association Agreement Moldova - European Union, contribution to visa liberalization with EU Member States and space Schengen and intense activity in order to increase the country's prestige internationally, she was awarded the Labor Glory (2014). In recognition of rational and systemic approach to improving the quality of education, she has won the Social Responsibility Leadership Award for Europe and Central Asia, awarded by the Global Partnership for Social Responsibility (2015). In 2021, she was decorated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with the First Order of the Prince Yaroslav the Wise Order.
