No cases of monkeypox reported in Moldova, ANSP said

Chisinau, May 24 / MOLDPRES /- The National Agency for Public Health / ANSP / said it is monitoring the epidemiological situation regarding cases of monkeypox reported worldwide, in accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organization and announced that in the Republic of Moldova no such cases or suspicions of disease have been reported.

According to the ANSP, monkeypox is a disease caused by a virus and is so named because it was first identified in 1958 in monkey colonies held for research. It was found in humans in 1970. Monkeypox is commonly found in Central and West Africa, where there are rainforests and where animals that can carry the virus live.

It can be spread from infected animals to humans and from one person who has symptoms to another through close physical contact. The rash, body fluids and crusts are particularly infectious.

Symptoms are usually fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, swollen lymph nodes, and rash or lesions. The rash focuses on the face, palms and soles. In most cases, the symptoms of monkeypox disappeared on their own within a few weeks.

Since May, cases of monkeypox in humans have been identified in several countries where the disease is not endemic. Specifically, since 21 May, 92 laboratory-confirmed cases and 28 suspected cases of monkeypox with ongoing investigations have been reported to the WHO in 12 member states that are not endemic for monkeypox virus.
