Chisinau, 2 June /MOLDPRES/ - The Independence Square from the centre of the western Ungheni municipality on 1 June was officially inaugurated after a capital repair, which had lasted ten months, within a regional project backed by the European Union.
„Intense work has been carried out, an area of 4,000 square metres paved, with a complex fountain. Fifteen magnolias were planted, 40 benches were set. The illumination system was renovated and an acoustic system was built. Modern waste bins are to be placed too.
Thus, the Independence Square, initially mentioned as administrative square of the urban project of Ungheni, carried out by architect N. Iudin in 1952 and envisaged for Soviet-type parades, including military ones, now became a friendly and attractive place for all residents of the Ungheni city,’’ the Ungheni city hall said.
All works were possible due to the support provided by the European Union, within the EU4Moldova: Focal Regions Programme.
„Almost two years following the launch of this programme, the Ungheni city’s centre was really modernized, with more infrastructure projects carried out, due to the financial assistance worth 1,375,400 euros, provided by EU. The Independence Square has become pedestrian street, the Nationala Street was rehabilitated, the adjacent parks were arranged,’’ reads a press release of the Ungheni administration.
