SMURD Iasi crew dead on duty commemorated in south Moldova district

Chisinau, 3 June /MOLDPRES/ - The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) today organized a ceremony on the commemoration of the heroes of the crew of the Mobile Emergency Service for Resuscitation and Extrication (SMURD) Iasi (Romania), who died on duty in the wake of a helicopter crash, which occurred nearby the settlement Haragas, southern Cantemir district, on 2 June 2016.
Attending the event were officials from both countries, which in their speeches referred to the courage, devotion and sacrifice brought by the SMURD crew in its last rescue mission carried out. They also highlighted the importance of the air medical interventions, in order to save lives of Moldova’s citizens. The ceremony ended with the laying of flowers.
On 2 June 2016, a Romanian helicopter of the SMURD emergency service, on mission in Moldova, crashed nearby the Haragas village. The helicopter already saved a person, was re-supplied with fuel in Chisinau and was on the way to another patient from Moldova. All crew members were killed in the accident: Doru Gavril, Voicu Şocae, Mihaela Dumea and Gabriel Sandu. They were posthumously awarded distinctions by the presidents of Romania and Moldova. One year later, a memorial complex was erected in the memory of the Haragas crew.
According to IGSU, 122 air and medical missions for the carriage and saving of people from Moldova have taken place since the launch of the SMURD Transfrontier Project in Moldova in 2014.
