Chisinau, August 24 /MOLDPRES/- In the six months since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, more than 65 thousand refugees were accommodated in 130 placement centers in the Republic of Moldova. The information was presented today by the head of the Single Crisis Management Center (CUGC), Colonel Adrian Efros, in a press conference.
According to the management of the CUGC, currently 74 placement centers with a capacity of 5500 places and six placement centers of the Migration and Asylum Bureau with a capacity of 2000 places remain active on the territory of our country. At the same time, 25 thousand Moldovan citizens hosted or are hosting approximately 33 thousand refugees.
“This war is going on too long, causing massive destruction and tens of thousands of deaths. Since the beginning of the invasion, more than 6 million citizens have left their homes, of which 580 thousand have transited the territory of our country. Currently, there are over 89 thousand refugees in the Republic of Moldova. If in the April-May period a reduction in the number of people was recorded, in the months of June-August the flow of citizens increased from 77 thousand to 89 thousand people. Our country stood by the refugees, and our citizens opened their doors wide. The necessary support was provided through the Single Center for Crisis Management", said Adrian Efros.
He emphasized that thanks to the international support, the refugees are accommodated for free, have access to all the necessary services and assistance and benefit from free food. "During this period, over 162 million lei (approximately 8.1 million euros) were collected through donations. About 73 percent of the amount was allocated for current expenses. In total, our country benefited from 587 batches of donations for refugees, worth 323 million lei. At the same time, the Republic of Moldova granted Ukraine donations worth 43 million lei. Our government and people are still close to Ukraine and its citizens who arrive in our country", said Adrian Efros.
Today marks six months since the outbreak of war in Ukraine. Also today, the country marks the National Day, which records the moment of the adoption, in 1991, of the Declaration of Independence from the USSR.
