Chisinau, 29 November /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today participated in a public action titled, Light a Candle, dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Holodomor (Great Famine) from Ukraine and Famine from Moldova. The event was organized by the Embassy of Ukraine in Chisinau, Community of Ukrainian Women and the National Congress of Ukrainians from Moldova, the presidential press service has reported.

The head of state spoke about the tragic consequences of the Stalinist regime during the famine organized in Ukraine (1932-1933 and 1946-1947) and on the present territory of Moldova (1946-1947). ‘’Four million Ukrainians with no guilt, four millions of women, children, elderly people, peasants who were living from the harvest of their land, died during the 1932 and 1933 years in the wake of a famine deliberately triggered by the Stalinist regime. Four million. This is just like to empty such a country as Moldova,’’ Maia Sandu stressed in her speech.

The Moldovan president also touched upon the atrocities of the Soviet authorities, in the wake of which millions of Ukrainians and Moldovans suffered. ‘’Deportations, executions, forcible collectivization, garrets from which any grain was swept away, ban on leaving the country to find a way of survival – all these were repeated in Moldova later on, leading into perdition hundreds of thousands of Moldovans. Ravaged villages, children with swollen bellies of starvation, mothers desperate to find at least amaranth, bark or old sandals, in order not to let their babies die under their eyes. And this while cereals were rotting in railway stations,’’ the president also said.

Maia Sandu condemned the horrible things of the unjust war presently waged by Russia in Ukraine.
