Chisinau, 9 Dec. /MOLDPRES/- The British government announced today a new package of sanctions aimed at those who oppress fundamental freedoms around the world, including Ilan Shor and Vladimir Plahotniuc.
According to British Ambassador to Moldova Steven Fisher, the two "corrupt Moldovans used their power and influence to enrich themselves illegally - stealing from fellow citizens and undermining the rule of law".
“As persons designated under the Global Anti-Corruption Sanctions Regulations 2021, Shor and Plahotniuc are henceforth denied the right to enter or remain in the United Kingdom. All assets they own in the UK and UK territories such as the Cayman Islands and the British Virgin Islands will be frozen. UK nationals and economic actors are prohibited from doing any type of business or economic transaction with them. We will continue to punish global corruption and serious human rights abuses through our sanctions regime," the diplomat noted.
“It is our duty as a nation to promote free and open societies around the world. I am proud of what we have done in Britain to stand up for human rights and the rule of law, standing up on the world stage for what we believe is right. We are committed to using every lever at our disposal and working with every partner we have to ensure a future of freedom over fear,” Fisher concluded.
