Moldova to withdraw from Gothenburg Environmental Protocol

Chisinau, Dec. 20 /MOLDPRES/- The Republic of Moldova withdraws from the group that promotes the ratification and implementation of the Gothenburg Protocol in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA Group), the Ministry of the Environment announced yesterday.

"The Republic of Moldova together with Ukraine, Georgia, being candidate countries for the EU, have undertaken commitments to promote the European Union's priorities in the field of the environment, or, many of them contradict those of the group that promotes the ratification and implementation of of the Gothenburg Protocol in the region of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia", explains the institution.

Also, our country's decision was taken because Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, Georgia could lay the foundations of a new regional coordination group, with visions closer to the European Union's policies in the field of environment, or they could become members of the regional group of Western Europe.

At the same time, one of the reasons for the withdrawal lies in the fact that the EECCA Group has an informal coordination character within the UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe).

The Gothenburg Protocol was approved by the European Council on behalf of the EU in June 2003. It was transposed into EU law mainly through directives on the limitation of atmospheric emissions of certain pollutants from large combustion plants.
