Chisinau, 21 December /MOLDPRES/ - The Moldovan diplomacy head, Nicu Popescu, has participated, in videoconference format, in the 40th meeting of the foreign affairs ministers of the GUAM (Organization for Democracy and Economic Development) member states. The event marked the end of the holding by Moldova of the organization’s chairmanship-in-office, the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s (MAEIE) press service has reported.
Moldova’s chairmanship in GUAM coincided with the 25th anniversary of the Organization. This allowed the country renewing its commitments for the organization’s values and goals: democracy, rule of law state, observance of human rights, strengthening the regional security and stability, deepening the European integration, in order to create a common area of security, economic stimulation and humanitarian cooperation.
„We have backed and we continue to support the values on which the Organization was founded, especially against the background of the brutal invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Our country, including in regional format, firmly condemned the war and remains solidary with Ukraine in its fight for freedom and democracy. We stay firm in supporting the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and we will continue to provide the safety and well-being of over 80,000 refugees from Ukraine, who live in Moldova, to provide humanitarian assistance, to ensure the ways of solidarity and do our utmost, in order to be a contributor to the regional stability.
Within GUAM, we had excellent contacts with all member states, with international and regional organizations. We made some progress in the sectoral activity, summoning working groups on emergency situations, transport, science and education, strategic communication and commerce,’’ the Moldovan official said.
