Chisinau, 12 Jan. /MOLDPRES/- From January 2023, the Molecular Biology Laboratory of the Public Institution Central Phytosanitary Laboratory subordinated to the National Agency for Food Safety (ANSA) has expanded its capacity to test genetically modified organisms.
"The testing is carried out by the RealTime PCR Multiplex method for the following transgenic elements: P35s, tNOS, FMV, BAR, NPTII, PAT, CTP2 : CP4 EPSPS", indicates ANSA.
According to the institution, these investigations are part of the process of strengthening the testing capacities of subordinate laboratories, in order to ensure, by the National Food Safety Agency, an effective control of genetically modified organisms.
Genetically modified organism (GMO) means an organism whose genetic material has been artificially modified to give it a new property (for example, resistance of the plant to a disease, insects or drought, increased productivity of agricultural crops, etc.). Both cultivation and marketing of imported GMOs for food and feed require prior authorisation, which includes scientific risk assessment.
