Chisinau, 16 January /MOLDPRES/ - The national currency on 17 January will appreciate against the euro and the U.S. dollar, according to the official exchange rates posted by the National Bank of Moldova (BNM).

Thus, on 17 January, one euro will cost 20.66 lei, down by 0.03 lei. The dollar will cheapen by 0.05 lei, to 19.08 lei.

The Russian rouble will cost 0.27 lei, by 0.01 lei less. The Romanian leu will remain at the level of 4.18 lei. The Ukrainian hryvnia will have the same tendency and will cost, in continuation, 0.51 lei.

In an economic analysis, expert Veaceslav Ionita assessed the principal features of the currency market in 2022 and the perspectives for 2023. According to Ionita, the energy crisis, registered shortly after the pandemic one, and fueled by the crisis of war in Ukraine, last year had a major impact on the currency market from Moldova. The 2020, 2021 and 2022 years will enter history as the years with the largest number of challenges for Moldova for the currency market, the expert said.

Veaceslav Ionita noted that the 2023 year, from the viewpoint of the currency market ‘’will be one with no problems.’’ ‘’Most likely, the prices for the energy resources will drop. In 2023 and 2024, the energy resources we are due to import will be less against those from 2022. The pressure to buy hard currency on the currency market will be lower. The external financial support, grants, which are now twice less than in 2014, in relation to the Gross Domestic Product, will have to be increased. As for the exchange rate of the Moldovan leu for 2023, there are no economic premises or risks of negative pressures,’’ Ionita added.
