Over 3,600 rural farms from Moldova to receive assistance to overcome crisis

Chisinau, 28 January /MOLDPRES/ - Over 3,600 extremely vulnerable rural agricultural farms from Moldova will benefit from assistance within a project worth 840,000 dollars, implemented by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the government of Japan. The project will contribute, along with another two ones, to the attenuation of the effects of the current crisis.   

The FAO representative in Moldova, Raimund Jehle, has said that the project was crucial for the farmers who face a difficult situation because of the war, the drought and high prices for agricultural inputs. Without the emergency assistance needed, the farmers will lose their incomes and the level of food insecurity will grow, the official noted.    

The project’s beneficiaries will receive agricultural inputs for the cultivation of cereals, growing vegetables and for maintaining animals. Also, trainings will be organized for them concerning the good agricultural practices of enhancing the resilience to the climate changes.  

„Along with FAO, we back the small farmers and we will contribute to ensuring the food security in Moldova,’’ Ambassador of Japan to Moldova Yamada Yoichiro said.  

Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Vladimir Bolea said ‘’the initiative gave possibility to thousands of vulnerable agricultural farms, hit by the war or extreme weather conditions, to benefit from the so necessary support, in order to be able to reestablish the production and reach self-sufficiency,’’ the minister noted.     

Since March 2022, FAO has been implementing in Moldova an emergency assistance programme with an overall budget of almost 3.5 million dollars, of which 500,000 dollars was allocated from the Organization’s own funds. The rest of the funds were mobilized with the support of other donors.
