Moldovan rescuers ready to intervene in Turkey to save victims of today's earthquake

Chisinau, 6 February /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova is ready to intervene in the rescuing of victims of a today’s devastating earthquake, which took place in Turkey and Syria. Thus, a team specialized in urban search and rescue is prepared to intervene with 55 rescuers, 12 fully autonomous special vehicles and 2 search dogs.
According to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), according to the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, Moldova is currently waiting. Today morning, IGSU conveyed willingness to intervene in Turkey to the European Union’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) and the Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre, in order to provide the Turkish government with support in missions of search and rescue of the victims of the today’s earthquake.
The team’s participation was approved by the head of Moldova’s Commission for Emergency Situations and is to arrive in the earthquake-hit region by air.
Moldova asked the EU and NATO to make available an aircraft, in order to carry the team of rescuers and needed technology to the place of the disaster.
In the wake of earthquakes with a magnitude on the Richter open scale of 7.9 degrees, which hit Turkey and the north-western part of Syria, Moldova received an official request on behalf of the Ankara government and submitted its offer of assistance the European Union’s and NATO’s mechanisms in charge of coordinating the assistance in case of disasters. Moldova’s team of search and rescue in urban areas is to work in the region hit in Turkey for at least seven days.
