Chisinau, April 3 /MOLDPRES/- Last year, a large part of wine made in Moldova was exported to 57 countries, according to the data presented late last week, during the National Conference of the Wine Sector - Wine Year 2022.

"Over 80% of the wine made in Moldova in 2022 was exported to 57 countries, and the price of a liter of wine delivered abroad registered a slight increase. The total amount of grapes processed in 2022 is 280 thousand tons, from which a volume of 190 million liters of wine was obtained, 10% more than in the previous year. On the other hand, 2022 also recorded a decrease in exports, both in terms of volume and accumulated revenues. Thus, the volume of exports decreased by 14%, and the value by 9.2%", the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAIA) said.

Factors that influenced the decrease in exports last year were: the war in Ukraine, the disruption of transport logistics, the decrease in bulk production to the CIS markets, etc.

MAIA State Secretary Sergiu Gherciu said that the institution's goals in 2023 for the wine sector are related to the increase of export activities, the sustainable development of businesses and the registration of a greater number of wine plots in the Wine Register.

"The year 2022 was a difficult one, with numerous challenges for agricultural producers. The wine sector has made significant efforts to adapt and develop first during the pandemic and now in the context of the war in Ukraine. For this reason, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry is taking actions to develop new agricultural strategies and policies to help the sector overcome the bad weather and prosper", said Gherciu.

"In such an uncertain context, it is essential to have pragmatic approaches, based on innovations and sustainable development. We must ensure that we continue to respond to consumer needs and protect the environment to ensure long-term food security. This year, we are determined to improve the quality and diversity of production, as well as to encourage cooperation between local and international producers. We are aware of the sector's vulnerability to extreme climate changes and the war situation in the neighboring country. Starting from the lessons learned in 2022, we aim to develop protection and resilience programs that will ensure sustainable wine production in the coming years," the MAIA official said.
