Moldova, Georgia to mutually protect geographical indications

Chisinau, 13 April /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova and Georgia commit to mutually recognize and protect the geographical indications registered nationally. An agreement which provides for this fact was ratified with the votes of 78 MPs at a today’s parliament meeting.
Through the ratification of this document, decision-makers establish a sure mechanism of protection of the geographical indications registered and a legal framework, which give native producers possibility to access new external markets.
Under the Agreement, three names of origin and seven geographical indications from Moldova will be protected in Georgia. Thus, the national economic interests will be protected, as no illicit associations, which are to jeopardize the producers’ reputation and, indirectly, the state’s image, will be allowed. Thus, decision-makers will be able to ensure the protection for the names of origin and geographical indications from Moldova on the territory of Georgia and vice versa.
The agreement will be concluded for a five-year period and will be able to be automatically extended.
