Orthodox Christians celebrate Easter of the Departed

Chisinau, April 23 /MOLDPRES/- Orthodox Christians celebrate today and tomorrow, April 23-24, Easter of the Departed. Marked predominantly in South-Eastern Europe, the event is based on the commemoration of the deceased. On Easter of the Departed, believers visit the graves of their loved ones, put them in order, priests officiate memorial services, after which relatives give alms for the souls of the dead.
Traditionally, Easter of the Departed is celebrated after Easter. In larger rural towns and cities where there are several cemeteries, the celebration takes place over several days, starting on Saturday.
The country where the celebration takes the greatest extent is the Republic of Moldova, where Monday is officially declared as a day off.
