Chernobyl disaster victims commemorated in Chisinau

Chisinau, April 26 /MOLDPRES/- Today we mark 37 years since reactor four at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded, affecting all of Europe. The victims of the accident were also commemorated in Chisinau.

Laying of flowers and a commemorative rally organized by the "Chernobîl Union" public association were organized in memory of the victims. Several officials were present at the commemoration events, including MP Oazu Nantoi. He gave a speech in which he thanked for the heroism of the people who participated in the liquidation of the consequences of the accident at Chernobyl.

According to official data, 3,550 Moldovans participated in the liquidation of the consequences of the accident, of which 1,865 remained alive, of which 1,780 are disabled. Every third participant in the liquidation of the accident at Chernobyl died.

Reactor no. 4 of the Ukrainian nuclear power plant exploded on April 26, 1986, and later to keep the radiation level under control a sarcophagus was built over the affected reactor. It was recently rebuilt by a French consortium. The construction of the new sarcophagus took 9 years, was carried out under the supervision of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and cost over 1.5 billion euros.
