Chisinau, 20 October /MOLDPRES/ - Hundreds of citizens of Moldova today morning came to those three polling stations opened in Bucharest. The people stayed in queue to vote at the presidential elections and the referendum on Moldova’s accession to the European Union.
Moldova’s citizens today elect their president for the next four years; yet, the principal stake of this day is the referendum, through which the voters decide whether they support the amendment of the Constitution, in order to introduce the notion of European integration.
According to media from Romania, most Moldovans who came to vote in Bucharest said that they backed Moldova’s integration into EU.
The local authorities informed that they recorded a massive presence of citizens waiting to vote at some polling stations from France, Italy, Turkey, Romania, Belgium, Russia. Thus, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) provided all polling stations from abroad with a sufficient number of ballot papers, so that all voters can exercise their right to vote. The data unveiled by CEC shows that the Diaspora is more active than at the last ballot, but votes a bit weaker than at the runoff election of the presidential polls from 2020.
According to CEC’s data, till 18:45, 1,425,284 citizens exercised their right to vote.
Under the legislation, for the referendum to be validated, a voter turnout of more than 30 per cent is needed.
