Chisinau, 4 November /MOLDPRES/ - European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle, at the end of his mandate, sent a letter to President Nicolae Timofti, expressing satisfaction with the present level of relations between Moldova and the European Union, the presidency's press service has reported.

The letter says:

"Dear Mr. President,

My mandate as European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy will end soon and, on this occasion, I want to thank you for the excellent cooperation that we had. In the last five years, the EU's neighbours have had to face more challenges. In such a  difficult context, we could count on your country's contribution and ideas in the process of reviewing and strengthening the European neighbourhood policy within the Eastern Partnership programme.

More important is that we have significantly deepened our relationships, assumed new ambitious initiatives and provided new opportunities to our citizens.

During my term, Moldova has substantially strengthened its relations with the European Union. After more years of partnership and cooperation, the signing of the Association Agreement on 27 June and the temporary enforcement of its provisions starting from 1 September marked a historic step in the development of our relations.

In 2014, we recorded other significant achievements as well - the abolition of the visa regime in April, which is an excellent example that close collaboration can bring tangible benefits to our citizens.

Moldova is also the first country in the Eastern Partnership participating in European Commission programmes meant to support research and the business environment. Knowing the efforts taken to carry out these actions, I wish for the mutual commitment to continue, thus increasing the number of contacts between our citizens, offering the latter new opportunities.

I also want to assure you that we will continue our commitment in the Transnistrian conflict settlement process and will support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova within the internationally recognised borders and granting Transnistria a  special status.

I wish Moldova and you personally success in continuing our cooperation. The European Commission will remain a strong and reliable partner of your country, as we continue to strive for a closer partnership, adapted to the needs of Moldova.

Respectfully,

 Štefan Füle”
